Kimchi master KIM Soon-ja is coming from Korea to demonstrate how to prepare kimchi in a traditional manner. The class will allow people to have a firsthand experience on ‘Kimchi’ and culture of ‘Kim-jang’ (making a bulk of kimchi in advance for the winter season) while learning Kimchi’s history and benefits.
Kimchi is Korea’s signature side dish, which consists of pickled cabbage as the main ingredient with a range of seasoned vegetables. Also, culture of ‘Kim-jang’ represents the Korean food culture, and was inscribed on the list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage items in 2013. ‘Kim-jang’ will also explain the culture of ‘Pumasee’, which is the exchange of labors between neighbors, embracing the spirit of sharing as well as one's sense of belonging to the community.
Through the class, people would be able to take a step further not only into the Korean food, but also into the culture around it.
